General Instructions:
1. Always warm up your dog before exercise (run a little or start with some light exercises).
2. Never exercise on a full stomach or feed your dog immediately after exercise. Light snacks as rewards are allowed.
3. Increase the demands on your dog gradually to avoid overexertion.
4. Adapt the exercise to your dog, taking into account their breed, age, aptitude, and size.
5. Allow sufficient breaks during training to prevent your dog from becoming overexerted and to maintain enjoyment. Always provide a bowl of water and allow your dog a short rest after drinking.
6. Remember that training should always end on a positive note.
Important: Pet and praise your dog during training – this motivates them and builds trust.
Fitness training can begin:
If your dog is unfamiliar with tunnel training, initially set up the tunnel in a straight line approximately 1 meter long. Always secure it with the enclosed ground anchors to prevent the tunnel from rolling away.
The training phases:
The first two training phases should always be carried out with a second person. This person stands at the beginning of the tunnel and makes sure the dog stays there as well. You go to the other end, look through the tunnel opening, and call your dog with a command, e.g., "Tunnel!" Whenever your dog has gone through, you should praise him and reward him with a small treat.
If your dog walks through without any problems and shows no fear, you can begin the second training phase: Pull the tunnel further apart. If that also works, you can challenge your dog again after a few repetitions by setting up the tunnel in a curve.
Perfect your training by no longer sending your dog into the tunnel and calling him from the other end, but by running alongside him: your dog through the tunnel and you alongside. Motivate him with a reward at the tunnel's end and throw a toy. This promotes fitness and speed.
If your dog enjoys training with the agility tunnel, you can challenge him anew with a so-called "sack tunnel." This is an agility piece of equipment that is a tunnel on one side and has no further reinforcement on the other; instead, the fabric hangs down, so there's no visible exit.
